Newquay
Golf Club - 18 Holes Links Par 69
This
fine old links course first opened in 1890 is located at the western
end of the town with fabulous views over Fistral Beach and the Atlantic
rollers.
At just over 6000 yards this is a good test with more than 100 bunkers
on the course. The course is always in good condition all year round
and with nice springy sandy based turf on most holes, there is no chance
of muddy conditions in the worst of weather. When the wind blows it's
a real test even for the low handicappers. Only one blind driving hole.
A very under-rated course that I know you will enjoy. One that I would
recommend if you want to include Links Golf in your package. |
Perranporth
Golf Club - 18 Holes Links Parkland Par 72
Completely
different type of links to Newquay with lots of high sandhills and a
few blind drives. The greens are usually fast and in excellent condition.
Designed by James Braid in 1927 this course has lovely coastal views
and offers three Par 3 holes with two of them pretty tough at over 200
yards. There are also three Par 5 holes a couple of which are for the
big hitters. |
Truro
Golf Club - 18 hole Par 66
A very attractive
parkland course first opened in 1927. Well maintained undulating fairways
means the drives and shots to the greens need to be placed correctly
to achieve a good score round this course. Lots of very attractive holes
which become easier if you are capable of achieving an intentional fade
or draw shot from the tee. Excellent greens with interesting borrows
to test your putting skills. The 14th Stroke index 1, hole is a challenge
at 458 yards. To reach this hole in two you need a drawing drive almost
clipping the large pines or a monster drive over the top of the trees.
Not many achieve the green in two. Although only 5,357 yards it is an
interesting course and a good test of golf. |
Trevose
Golf Club - 18 Holes Links Par 71
Supplements
£28
Regarded as
one of the finest in the Southwest, Trevose is an exciting test of golf.
The fairways are wide for the most part, encouraging one to hit out
rather than be cautious. There are two excellent Par 3's on the outward
nine. The 4th, Par 5 can be reached in two if you are bold and skilled
enough to cut off the dogleg with your drive, avoiding at the same time
a large hidden bunker. The green to this hole is set almost on the beach
with delightful sea views. On the inward nine, the 14th and 15th are
comparatively easy, short Par 4's but the closing three holes are a
real challenge!. The 16th is a long Par 3 and unless you hit a reasonable
drive t the 17th it will be necessary to lay up, rather than go for
it over the stream which cuts across the fairway immediately in front
of the green. The 18th is a long Par 4 with a slight uphill gradient
adding to the difficulty factor. The shot to the green requires great
accuracy as any stroke hit even slightly left will fall away into a
deep hollow! Trevose is a course you could play every day and still
enjoy the challenge. |
St
Mellion International - Two 18 Hole Courses
The Old Course - Par 70 Supplements £7
and The Nicklaus Course - Par 72 Supplements £15
The
old course was built by local farmers Martin and Herman Bond, with excellent
club house facilities. Here you will find a large indoor swimming pool,
squash courts, restaurant, cafeteria, snooker room and bars. Following
their success with this course, the brothers approached Jack Nicklaus
to design the best course available capable of hosting international
tournaments. Since it's completion it has hosted the Benson and Hedges
International for several years. A superb and challenging course at
6,626 yards it is more suited to the lower/middle handicappers. Lots
of beautiful holes where the tee shot is all important. The fairways
are lined by either trees or steep banks with streams and water on several
holes. It's the sort of course that a lot of people want to go back
to, or never see again! Each trip you can string several Par's together
before you have a disaster thast ruins that round. Highly recommended
for the low handicapper but do hire a buggy. There are some long walks
between tees and I guarantee you will be up and down a few steep banks
looking for your ball. It's not cheap, but with the concessionary rates
we can offer it is well worth a visit. The Nicklaus course tends to
overshadow the Old Course which is also excellent but 700 yards shorter
than the big course. Some good holes on this course and well worth a
visit. |
Bowood
Park Golf Club - 18 Holes Par 72 Downland / Parkland
A superb course
designed by Robert Sandow and opened in July 1992. For a new course
the greens and fairways are in excellent condition. This is the longest
course in the county off the white tees at 6,692 yards - a tough test
off the back tees. On several holes if you hit a bad shot and miss both
the fairway and semi rough you will find yourself, but probably not
your ball, in thigh high whispey grass. There are four par 5 holes,
two of which - the third and tenth, can be reached in two by the big
hitters. Even after playing a good drive at the 420 yard par 4 fifth,
you can still be stymied by a large tree smack in the middle of the
fairway. The par 5 seventh is a monster at 600 yards. I don't think
John Daley could reach this one in two. After two shots you still have
a shot to the green that doglegs left across a valley with a tree guarding
the corner of the green. It's better not to be too long with your second
shot as you then get a better approach to the green. The most attractive
hole on the course is the par 4 twelfth. Although only 385 yards you
do need a good drive to hit this green in two. There is an out of bounds
on your left and a stream and trees to your right. Having steered a
good drive away you are then confronted with a green guarded by trees
both sides, also the stream widens out and runs across the front of
the green. A super hole. The thirteenth is a par 5 that really bends
to the right. Even after having hit a good drive you still can't see
the green! Some may be tempted to go for it as it is easily reachable,
but requires a really accurate blind shot over thich trees to the well
guarded green. If you're playing for money then take my advice and lay
up short! A super course and one that I would recommend. |
Lanhydrock
- 18 Holes Parkland Par 71 Supplements £5
Another
of the many newer courses in Cornwall opened in May 1991. The architect,
Mr. Hamilton Stutt, has designed one of the most attractive and challenging
courses in the South West. There are several holes where water comes
into play including the Par 4 first with a lake directly in front of
the green and the very attractive Par 3 sixth at 187 yards with water
in the front and to the right of the green. You should take an iron
from the tee on a couple of short Par 4's in order to thread your way
to a tight landing area through the tree-lined fairways. You will know
these holes when you step on the tee. The Par 5 seventh at 493 yards
can be reached in two but you must play a drawing tee shot (for right
handers) or clip the trees to the left of the tee on this; the only
blind driving hole. A super course I know you will enjoy. |
Carlyon
Bay - 18 Holes Parkland / Downland Par 72
Supplements £6
A fine
course that is always maintained in excellent condition. The opening
holes run along the edge of the cliffs of St. Austell Bay, with views
across to the ancient harbour at Polkerris. An interesting mix of downland
and parkland golf. There are some really excellent and challenging holes
here. At the Par 4 second hole only the long drivers will get a view
of the green for the second shot. Three good Par 5's here. The Par 5
fifteenth can be reached in two by the big hitters but offers a challenging
drive with large pine trees on your right and out bounds on your left.
At the tenth, Par 5 the green is set nearby the clay port at Bar. The
next few holes go inland and away from the sea. It is necessary to cross
the main London to Penzance railway line to play the 14th and 17th holes
before recrossing the line to play the final challenging Par 3 eighteenth.
A super course and one that I would recommend. |
Lostwithiel
Golf and Country Club - 18 Holes Downland & Parkland
Par 72
Yet another
new course opened in 1991. This course has an interesting mixture with
the first seven holes being high downland then dropping into the valley
and parkland. lots of interesting holes with several blind drives and
narrow landing areas. The Par 5 first at 532 yards has a fairly generous
driving area narrowing viciously with steep banked sides for the second
shot. After a lengthy walk to the second tee youo are confronted with
a steeply rising Par 4 second. Anyone over 45 shold take an oxygen bottle
or make sure you have an electric trolley. Not a hole for the heavy
smoker, but luckily you confront this early in the round, and what goes
up must eventually come down. Down in fact to the Par 3 eighth at 154
yards with the green being about 100ft lower than the tee. This makes
for interesting club selection. A ballistics chart would be helpful
here. Down at last to the remaining flat back nine where you can leisurely
finish your round with only lakes, trees and streams to worry about!
A superb new Club House with a good restaurant, indoor swimming pool
and all weather tennis courts. |
Looe
- 18 Holes Heath & Parkland Par 70
Opened in
the 1930's this course was designed by the great Harry Vardon, six times
"Open" Winner in the late 1800's and early 1900's. The course
was named Looe Bin Down Golf Club until 1989 when it was purchased by
the owners of St. Mellion and renamed Looe Golf Club. An excellent course
with an interesting mixture of heathland and parkland, beinf 600 feet
above sea level. It offers superb views of the South East Cornwall coastal
region. Testing starting and finishing holes, the first a par 3 at only
142 yards, but an accurate shot is required to avoid the large guarding
oak tree. The 18th is an excellent finishing hole, a Par 4 at 454 yards,
with a dogleg to the right. |
Tehidy
Park - Parkland Par 72
A fine old
well established parkland course. The first few holes are fairly open
with only a few trees and the usual bunkers. As you progress you will
find some really interesting holes. At the short Par 4 fourth, which
can be driven with an accurate tee shot, watch out for the ditch that
runs across the fairway just short of the green, which is guarded by
a large tree. There are several tree-lined drives and several holes
with out of bounds running the length of the hole. |
Treloy
- 9 Holes Downland Par 32
A new short
course first opened in June 1991, built high on rolling downland with
countryside views. You can play twice round this course if you include
this as one of your choices or perhaps an extra 9 holes one day at a
very modest concessionary fee. Although of modest length it will appeal
to all handicaps. A favourite of the ladies and the more elderly golfer
seeking only the gentle sloping fairways. For the golfer not yet lucky
enough to gain entry to a club, it is possible to pay a very modest
county membership fee and arrangements made to play the stipulated number
of rounds to obtain an Official Handicap Certificate. |
